Etching Techniques

We design and sandblast etch in glass (and even natural stones) using the following techniques. Each technique can be used individually or in combination, as called for by the design and your preferences:

Surface Etching creates a negative and positive image by etching a design into the surface of the glass, with minimal depth. For privacy, an inverse image can be created by etching everywhere on the glass except the design.

Shading is a variation of surface etching, in which the intensity of the etch is gradually reduced, even to the point of fading out entirely. Shading can be used to produce internal texture and detail in a surface etch.

Multi-Stage Carving: Etching in two or more stages gives depth to a design, and helps bring out internal details. We can vary the depth of the carving within each layer, and between layers, to produce a sculpted surface that explores the third dimension of complex subjects. Gradations of detail can be both extreme and subtle, side by side, allowing us to translate even complex subjects into glass. Edge lighting is an installation option that enhances the 3D qualities of carved glass.
